mosaic bottega workshop series
mosaic bottega is Italian for fabrication studio, a true workshop where you create.
This is a 6 weekly course held on Tuesday mornings between 10am - 1pm.
Each 6 week period is an exercise in the mosaic artform to further your knowledge and ability to create works using marble, smalti, glass, unglazed tiles, millefiore and more.
For example, in our first Mosaic Bottega (extended) 6 week term the class followed a classical approach and reproduced the Ravenna Doves in marble using hammer and hardie. And the class was introduced to a new fabrication technique using mesh.
Bottega I & II
In 2005 the Mosaic Bottega workshop series was started.
Bottega I was about reproducing one of the classical mosaic doves from Ravenna in Italy. As much as possible the participants had to reproduce the mosaic using a hammer and hardie and working in marble.
Many issues had to be resolved along the way. Sourcing the right colour material, determining the original size of the dove, fabrication techniques and more.
The temptation to add a little colour via smalti or to vary the design just a tad was taken by some, whilst others doggedly pursued the original focus of this mosaic art exercise. All in all, everyone learnt something about the past, about the process and about themselves.
Bottega III
Working in 2D - creating a Bas Relief Sculpture and then mosaicing it.
Pursuing our knowledge of colour
Discovering Sources of Inspiration.
Bottega IV
Here we continue to pursue the 2D form using a variety of materials.
'Shapes inspired by nature' a mosaic art exercise in undulating surfaces.
Bottega V
Inspired By Hundterwasser - a journey into the abstract. Where we created an abstract painting nd then transformed it into a mosaic.
Bottega VI
6 week course held on Tuesday mornings between 10am - 1pm.
